Language teaching in India tends to sit inside large universities, with a narrow academic focus on reading and writing. As language learners ourselves, we thought Laxmangarh needed somewhere that aimed at practical fluency — built on real grammatical understanding and a wide vocabulary, rather than on memorised phrases.

Teaching adapts to the student: their interests, how they learn and what they want the language for. There is a designed curriculum, but pace, scheduling and the topics covered all bend to the individual.

A class balances grammar, new vocabulary and conversation practice. Homework is set. There are no end-of-course examinations unless a student asks for one; instead teachers evaluate informally as they go, which is what tells them how to plan the next class.

Learning a language is by turns exhilarating and daunting, so the atmosphere aims to be rigorous and relaxed at once. The question we hold ourselves to is simply: is the student learning?
