Why we kept it
Online teaching began here out of necessity, when schools across the country closed and everyone had to work out how to teach through a screen. It was difficult for teachers and students alike, and nobody would pretend it replaced a classroom.
But some of it was worth keeping. A pupil who misses a week for illness or a wedding can catch up. A pupil who did not follow a topic can hear it again without asking the class to wait. And a shy pupil will often type a question they would never raise a hand to ask.
What works better online
- A recorded lesson can be paused, and repeated as often as needed
- Progress is easier to track, because the record is kept automatically
- Short quizzes can follow each concept, rather than waiting for a test
- Students who hesitate to speak in class will often write instead
- Material stays available for revision before the examination
